The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an investigation into a brake defect in 2024 Ford Maverick Hybrid vehicles.

The NHTSA's office of defects investigation said it has received a petition on July 20 requesting a defect investigation into the intermittent loss of braking on those vehicles.

The petition alleges am intermittent loss of antilock and regenerative braking associated with certain fault codes that led to a collision.

The petitioner highlights that the condition persisted through four repair attempts and more than 50 days out of service. It also alleges that the model was improperly excluded from related Ford brake-control software recalls.

The investigation could impact 82,040 vehicles, according to the NHTSA's estimate. The petition is the only failure report currently filed for that model.
