China's ambitious "Golden Grand Loop" is on the horizon. Recently, the Ministry of Transport announced that during the 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026-2030), it will fully connect the three national highway trunk routes along the border and coast—G219, G331, and G228—creating a massive ring road encircling the nation's frontier and shoreline. With this top-level planning now in place, why are these three corridors so critical, and what fresh opportunities will they unlock?

National Highway G219 stretches from Kanas in Xinjiang to Dongxing in Guangxi, with a planned total length of approximately 10,000 kilometers. Passing through Xinjiang, Tibet, Yunnan, and Guangxi, it is currently the longest national highway in China. National Highway G331 runs from Dandong in Liaoning to Altay in Xinjiang, spanning roughly 9,200 kilometers across six provinces—Liaoning, Jilin, Heilongjiang, Inner Mongolia, Gansu, and Xinjiang—and is widely hailed as the "Most Beautiful Border Road." National Highway G228 connects Dandong in Liaoning to Dongxing in Guangxi, covering about 7,400 kilometers and linking ten provincial-level regions: Liaoning, Hebei, Tianjin, Shandong, Jiangsu, Shanghai, Zhejiang, Fujian, Guangdong, and Guangxi, offering uninterrupted views of the mainland coastline along the way.

Combined, these three highways form a continuous loop of nearly 27,000 kilometers—roughly two-thirds of the Earth's equatorial circumference. Fully integrating these routes will weave together coastal and inland regions, creating an ultra-long-distance overland ring road for the country.

Building a Seamless Border Transport Network that Rings the Frontier and Reaches the Sea

The "Golden Grand Loop" is strategically positioned along the national border, addressing past weaknesses such as dead-end frontier roads and insufficient emergency access. It will establish a closed-loop border transport network. Wu Zhihua, Deputy Director of the Comprehensive Planning Department at the Ministry of Transport, noted that "ringing the frontier and reaching the sea" captures the core transport function of the loop. This design breaks away from the old pattern where border and coastal highways operated independently and often ended as cul-de-sacs. Using Dandong in Liaoning, Dongxing in Guangxi, and Altay in Xinjiang as key junction points, it links the northern border, western border, and coastline into one complete circuit.

By connecting over a hundred land ports and all major coastal ports nationwide, the network upgrades from "one-way dead ends" to a "circulatory system," providing a vital transport artery for coordinated development across border and coastal regions.

Weaving Together Natural Wonders and Ancient Cities to Forge a World-Class Cultural Tourism Corridor

From snow-capped plateaus to grasslands, rainforests, deserts, and coastal vistas, the "Golden Grand Loop" showcases diverse natural landscapes while threading through historic cities, creating a one-of-a-kind self-driving route and positioning itself as a world-class ultra-long cultural tourism corridor. As a key segment of the loop, the Jilin section of G331 was fully opened last year. This border highway links the riverside scenery of Ji'an, the forested expanses of Changbai Mountain, the ethnic customs of Yanbian, and the port vistas of Hunchun. With upgraded road conditions and improved roadside facilities, it has become a highly popular border self-drive destination. In the first half of this year alone, the G331 corridor welcomed over 2 million visitors. Residents of border villages are now earning income by investing in guesthouses, opening specialty restaurants, and selling local agricultural products—all from their doorsteps.

The loop will also integrate remote border villages into the modern economy, extending public services like education and healthcare along its route, facilitating the flow of specialty goods to broader markets, and generating additional employment opportunities in hospitality, dining, and related sectors.

Linking Ports and Harbors to Expand the Reach of Opening-Up

To the west, the "Golden Grand Loop" connects with the New Western Land-Sea Corridor and China-Europe freight trains; to the east, it links ocean-going trade routes. By tying together major coastal ports and border crossings, it will enable networked connections across China's land ports with Central and Southeast Asia. Li Hongchang, a researcher at the National High-End Think Tank Sustainable Transport Innovation Center and a professor at Beijing Jiaotong University, explained that G228 links coastal ports, forming a transport and logistics passage that connects land borders to coastal harbors. By integrating border port hubs with corridor and hub economies across various sectors, this approach helps drive comprehensive economic and social development along the border and the route.

On August 14, the Fuqing Donggang Bridge—a key project on the Fujian section of G228—completed the closure of its southern half, with full completion expected by year-end. On August 21, the main towers of the Dajiucai Jiangkou Bridge on G331, the largest suspension bridge in Northeast China, were fully topped out, with work now shifting to superstructure construction.

The Ministry of Transport has stated that during the 15th Five-Year Plan period, the "Golden Grand Loop" will see approximately 7,400 kilometers of construction or upgrades, with total investment of around 370 billion yuan. Highways G219 and G331 will largely meet Class III standards or above, while coastal G228 will achieve Class II standards or above. Local governments will also develop premium self-driving tourism routes tailored to the natural scenery along the corridor.

The ministry emphasized that construction during this period will no longer be about simply "adding projects," but rather optimizing spatial layouts, unclogging major economic circulation arteries, and promoting balanced regional development. From a stunning scenic drive to an "economic corridor," the "Golden Grand Loop" touches every facet of economic and social progress. What unfolds is not just scenery along the way, but a long-term blueprint for coordinated regional growth and mutually beneficial opening-up both at home and abroad.
