South Korea's Consumer Sentiment Dips in August for First Time in Four Months Amid Market Volatility and Price Pressures

South Korea's consumer confidence experienced its first decline in four months during August, driven by stock market turbulence and lingering inflation concerns, according to data released by the central bank on Tuesday.

The composite consumer sentiment index (CCSI) for this month registered at 104.5, marking a decrease of 2.3 points from July's reading, as revealed in the Bank of Korea's survey. This downturn represents the first monthly drop since April, even though the index has maintained a position above the 100 threshold since May. A reading exceeding 100 indicates that optimists outnumber pessimists, whereas a figure below that level suggests the opposite sentiment.

The central bank noted that although the underlying economic trajectory remains solid, the recent equity market correction coupled with elevated inflation has weighed heavily on consumer outlook. While consumer prices rose 2.8% in July compared to a year earlier, showing some easing from the previous month's 3.2% increase, a significant portion of the public still perceives prices as being excessively high.

In August, the sub-index evaluating current economic conditions fell by 5 points to 79, while the sub-index measuring expectations for future economic performance dropped 3 points to 89. The KOSPI index saw a substantial 24.6% decline in July alone, fueled by apprehensions regarding the prospects of large-scale investments in artificial intelligence infrastructure. Nonetheless, South Korea's export sector remains resilient, bolstered by robust global demand for memory chips, with July exports climbing 63% year-on-year to reach the second-highest level on record.
