ETF Market Wrap (Aug 25): Interim Results Validate Innovative Drug Sector Rally While Gold's Pullback Caps Mining Stock Gains

Hong Kong's stock market experienced narrow oscillations today, with all three major indices closing slightly lower. The release of interim results has provided solid validation for the innovative drug sector, shifting industry logic toward fundamental drivers and lifting innovative drug ETFs collectively. Meanwhile, international gold prices reversed after an initial surge, dragging related instruments lower and leaving gold mining stock ETFs with lackluster performance.

By the close, the Hang Seng Index edged down 0.02% to 25,511.1 points, with total turnover reaching HK$254.079 billion. The Hang Seng Tech Index dipped 0.12% to 4,588.54 points. Among Hong Kong-listed ETFs ranked by scale, Tracker Fund of Hong Kong (02800) gained 0.15% to HK$26.02, CSOP Hang Seng Tech Index (03033) rose 0.04% to HK$4.498, and Hang Seng China Enterprises (02828) slipped 0.21% to HK$86.88.

Sector Performance

1. Interim results have provided robust confirmation of the innovative drug sector's strength, steering industry logic toward fundamentals and propelling innovative drug ETFs higher. By the close, Hang Seng Innovative Drug ETF Jingshun (513780.SH) climbed 3.24% to RMB 1.723, HK Connect Innovative Drug ETF Wanjia (520700.SH) advanced 3.11% to RMB 1.66, and Hang Seng Innovative Drug ETF GF (513120.SH) rose 2.79% to RMB 1.327. According to the current batch of 2026 interim reports, domestic pharmaceutical companies have seen innovative drug revenue continue its upward trajectory, gradually replacing generics as the core growth engine. Concurrently, the total value of out-licensing deals for Chinese mainland innovative drugs reached US$110 billion in the first half of 2026, underscoring the strengthening globalization trend. GF Securities noted that with commercialization expansion and out-licensing driving growth in tandem, the industry has reached an inflection point in profitability, with continued fundamental improvements. China Industrial Securities added that as the interim reporting window nears its end, valuation pressures on several pharmaceutical leaders have eased following earnings delivery, creating a positive feedback loop, with healthcare and vaccine concepts dominating sub-sector gains.

2. International gold prices reversed after an early rally, pulling related instruments lower and leaving gold mining stock ETFs with muted outcomes. By the close, Gold Mining Stock ETF Huaan (159321.SZ) fell 3.53% to RMB 1.694, Gold Mining Stock ETF Guotai (517400.SH) dropped 3.37% to RMB 1.75, and Gold Mining Stock ETF Yongying (517520.SH) declined 3.31% to RMB 2.217. Spot gold briefly surged nearly 1% to US$4,695.31 per ounce during early trading before sharply reversing into losses. Market analysts attribute the reversal to a substantial bearish options trade on U.S. equities: a trader sold nearly 116,000 in-the-money call options on the SPDR Gold Shares ETF, pocketing US$202 million in premiums, which was interpreted as a signal of near-term bearishness on gold. Looking at the medium-to-long term, Caitong Securities macro research suggests that with U.S. Treasury debt surpassing US$40 trillion and rising fiscal sustainability risks, the de-dollarization narrative is resurging. Gold's long-term trend remains driven by debt dynamics, and with central banks worldwide maintaining strong gold purchase momentum, the metal is poised to enter a new upward cycle.

Institutional Perspectives

Soochow Securities holds the view that the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield has returned to elevated levels around 4.7%, while the 30-year yield also remains high. Market concerns primarily stem from fiscal deficit pressures, oil price and inflation worries, and the diversion of U.S. Treasury funds by large-scale bond issuance from AI companies. This marks a shift in the market's periodic pricing focus—from a dual "earnings plus macro" framework to a macro-dominated phase. Although fundamentals suggest no concern over severe market volatility, macro-level fluctuations are likely to repeatedly disrupt markets from late August through September. Soochow Securities further indicated that short-term incremental capital inflows require additional catalysts. Domestic fundamental consensus is relatively aligned, with no obvious new variables emerging. On the overseas front, the trajectory of U.S. Treasury yields warrants continued monitoring. Near-term attention should center on Federal Reserve Chair Warsh's remarks at the Jackson Hole conference and the impact of Nvidia's earnings on AI narratives and technology sector sentiment.
